Florida lawyer disbarred for loan modification service fraud
When soliciting the assistance of a lawyer it’s important to choose a reputable person. Try asking friends or trusted community members for recommendations to avoid problems like those that occured in Florida. William Timothy O’Toole was disbarred earlier this month for "splitting fees with non-lawyers, improperly soliciting clients," and not making good on promised services. Clients paid fees to his Summit Legal Group after being misled that O’Toole would represent them in foreclosure defense cases, including cases outside of Florida, the only state in which O’Toole was licensed. At the time, it was illegal in Florida to charge up-front fees, a law that has recently been applied nationwide.
